THE SITUATION OF MENTAL RESTLESSNESS – ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS THE NAME FOR A SMALL PAVILLION. FOLIES OR FOLLIES (ENGL.) ARE WITHOUT PARTICULAR USE, JUST FOR AMUSEMENT AND DISTRACTION. THEY ARE KIND OF IRRITATING, BUT INVITE TO THINK AND RETHINK. AT FIRST SIGHT FOLLIES SEEM TO BE DROPPED BY COINCIDENCE SOMEWHERE INTO THE LANDSCAPE – BUT IN FACT THEY ARE ARRANGED WITH EXTREME CARE – AS SECRET PLACE OR MEETING SPOT. IT HAS BEEN THIS SPECIAL UNCERTAINTY – THAT PROVOKED THE DESIGNERS RALF BENDER, SVEN-ANWAR BIBI AND ERIC DEGENHARDT.
THEIR INSTALLATION (SHOWN FOR THE FRST TIME ON THE OCCATION OF IMM COLOGNE 2005 AT STYLEPARK IN RESIDENCE – “THOUGHT ABOUT: FOLLIES, WEITGEHEND SINNLOSE UND ZWECKFREIE LUSTBAUTEN” IRRITATES. WHAT DO I SEE? A SHELF, A BENCH OR A TABLE?
TECHNOID APPEALING STRUCTURES, CLEAR SHAPED SURFACES, BROKEN WITH HOLES. IS THIS FURNITURE? PARTLY UPHOLSTERED ELEMENTS SEEM TO REFER TO FURNITURE … BUT OBVIOUS INTERPRETATIONS LOOSE THEIR BASE AS FAST AS THE THREEDIMENSIONAL ELEMENTS SEEM TO HOOVER ALONG THE WALLS AND CEILING. FIRST OF ALL THOUGHT ABOUT: FOLLIES IS AN INVITATION TO RELAXATION THAT THE DESIGNERS OFFER THEMSELVES AS WELL AS TO THEIR AUDIENCE. IT IS THE ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE AND BREAKE OFF THE RIGID RULES OF DESIGN AND MARKETING – AT LEAST FOR A SECOND – A ROMANTIC VENTURE – BUT IT EXITES TO SEE, TO BE ASTONISHED – TO PASS BY.
